Messengers Deliver & Believers Obey
Quran Talk Blog · Article · December 13, 2024
While there are plenty of articles on the blog that cover this topic for those who are interested, God willing, I’ll just provide a short answer here. For the uninformed, Hadith are narrations attributed to the prophet that were compiled and written hundreds of years after the prophet’s death. These narrations not only contradict and go against the Quran delivered by Muhammad, but they are condemned in the Quran as not only do they have no authority in the religion, but they also have no legitimacy in what they attribute to the prophet. So, while one is obligated to obey the messenger, we are under no obligation to obey unverifiable conjecture attributed to a messenger.
The Quran even warned that the creation of such fabrications against the prophet are the exact tactics the devil’s agents would use to try to trick the masses into upholding false doctrines never authorized by God.
6:112 We have permitted the enemies of every prophet—human and jinn devils—to inspire in each other fancy words, in order to deceive. Had your Lord willed, they would not have done it. You shall disregard them and their fabrications. 6:113 This is to let the minds of those who do not believe in the Hereafter listen to such fabrications, and accept them, and thus expose their real convictions.
