Mark’s account of Jesus’ arrest in Gethsemane contains a detail that appears in no other Gospel. After the disciples scatter, two verses follow:
And a young man followed him, with nothing but a linen cloth about his body; and they seized him, but he left the linen cloth and ran away naked. (Mark 14:51–52)
The young man is never named, never mentioned again, and never explained. He appears for two verses and vanishes. Readers have puzzled over him for centuries, and in recent decades a small group of writers has used him to float a charge: that the scene hints at a sexual relationship between Jesus and a youth, supposedly natural in a Greco-Roman world where pederasty was common.
What the Charge Claims
The argument runs in three steps. First, adult men took adolescent boys as lovers in Greek and Roman society. Second, Mark’s youth is dressed only in a linen cloth, and he is later found naked. Third, therefore, the passage whispers about something intimate between Jesus and the young man.
The first step is half true. Pederasty is well documented in classical Athens, where an older man (the erastes) pursued a younger one (the eromenos) within a social code that Plato’s Symposium discusses at length. But “common in Greek and Roman culture” flattens a great deal. The Athenian institution belongs to the classical period, and it was never uniform across the Greek world. Rome was more hostile. Roman law and moral opinion treated sexual use of a freeborn boy as a serious offense (stuprum), and the practice that did occur was largely tied to slaves, who had no legal protection. Most important for this passage, Jewish writers of Jesus’ own era condemned the practice outright. Philo of Alexandria denounces pederasty in his treatise On the Special Laws, and Josephus presents the Jewish law as opposed to all unnatural intercourse. Mark’s setting is Jewish Galilee and Jerusalem, and neither the Gospel nor its audience gives any sign of reading the scene through a Greek gymnasium.
The second and third steps fail on the text. Mark calls the figure a neaniskos, a young man, not a boy. The word covers anyone from adolescence into the twenties or thirties. Nothing in the verses connects him to Jesus beyond the fact that he was following. He is seized by the arresting party, not by Jesus, and he loses his cloth in the struggle. The nakedness is the result of panic, not intimacy.
Where the Insinuation Really Comes From
The suggestion does not come from Mark. It comes largely from the work of Morton Smith, a Columbia historian who reported finding, in 1958, a letter in the library of the Mar Saba monastery near Jerusalem. The letter, attributed to Clement of Alexandria, quotes from a longer “Secret Gospel of Mark” that supposedly circulated in Alexandria. One quoted episode has Jesus raising a young man from the dead. The youth then comes to Jesus at night, wearing a linen cloth over his naked body, and remains with him while Jesus teaches him the mystery of the kingdom of God. Smith published the material in 1973 and later argued in Jesus the Magician that this pointed to a secret nighttime initiation, possibly with a sexual dimension.
Three problems follow immediately. The quoted text does not describe a sexual act; Smith inferred one. The manuscript was never made available for independent examination, and only photographs exist. And the document’s authenticity is seriously contested. Stephen Carlson’s The Gospel Hoax (2005) and Peter Jeffery’s The Secret Gospel of Mark Unveiled (2007) argue that Smith or someone close to him fabricated it. Many scholars remain unconvinced either way, but no one can build a historical claim about Jesus on a text whose existence rests on a single scholar’s report. And even if the letter were genuine, it would describe a second-century Alexandrian text, not the Gospel as Mark wrote it.
What the Passage Probably Means
The scholarly readings that deal with Mark’s own text are far more modest. Some see the young man as Mark himself, a signature tucked into the story, a tradition that reaches back centuries. Others hear an echo of Amos 2:16, where in the day of the LORD “he who is stout of heart among the mighty shall flee away naked in that day.” On that reading, Mark is showing that even those who wished to follow Jesus fled when the hour came. A third reading notes that the word for the linen cloth, sindon, is the word Mark later uses for the shroud in which Jesus is buried (15:46), and that Mark uses neaniskos again for the young man in white at the empty tomb (16:5). A figure who abandons a linen cloth and runs away stands in deliberate contrast to the one who wears white at the resurrection. None of these readings requires a scandal, and none is helped by one.
Two More Scenes from John
The Gospel of John supplies two further scenes that the same school of reading has taken up: the disciple “whom Jesus loved,” and the washing of the disciples’ feet at the last supper. Unlike the Mark 14 theory, this one has no ancient pedigree. It is a modern revisionist argument, and its best-known scholarly statement is Theodore Jennings’s The Man Jesus Loved (2003), written by a theologian who reads the texts sympathetically and argues that they carry a homoerotic undertone.
The first scene is the supper itself. “One of his disciples, whom Jesus loved, was lying close to the breast of Jesus” (John 13:23). Taken out of context, the language sounds intimate. In context, it describes a seating arrangement. Diners at a formal meal in this period reclined on couches, leaning on the left elbow, so that the person on the host’s right literally had his head near the host’s chest. The position was one of honor, and it served the story, since it put the disciple within whispering distance when Peter asks him to find out who the betrayer is (13:24–25). The Gospel then uses the same idiom for Jesus himself, who is “in the bosom of the Father” (John 1:18). No one reads that as erotic. It means closeness of relationship and access to knowledge, and that is exactly what the beloved disciple’s position is meant to establish for the Gospel’s own authority (21:24). Nor is “love” a code word. The same Gospel says, “Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus” (11:5), and Jesus tells all his disciples to love one another as he has loved them (13:34).
The second scene is the foot-washing. The argument here is that “feet” is a euphemism for the genitals in the Hebrew Bible, so that Jesus washing the disciples’ feet reads as something else. The premise has some support. Ruth 3:7 is the standard example, where Ruth uncovers Boaz’s “feet” and lies down, and scholars debate similar cases in Exodus 4:25 and Isaiah 7:20. But in those passages the euphemism is carried by the surrounding action, which is already sexual or bodily in its setting. John 13 works the other way. It explains the act, and the explanation is not hidden. Jesus takes off his outer garment, ties a towel around himself, and does the work a household slave would do, for all twelve men, including Judas, who is still at the table, and Peter, who objects that the Master should not do it. Jesus then states the purpose: “you also ought to wash one another’s feet” (13:14). He presents it as a pattern of humble service for the whole community.
An Old Pattern
The charge is not new in shape. When a narrative about a prophet contains a detail that can be read as sexual, someone reads it that way, and the reading then follows the prophet’s memory around.
David is the clearest case, though it works differently from the others. The Bible itself records that David, from the roof of his house, “saw from the roof a woman bathing; and the woman was very beautiful” (2 Sam. 11:2), and what follows is adultery and the arranged death of her husband Uriah. The prophet Nathan’s rebuke, “You are the man” (2 Sam. 12:7), makes the biblical verdict plain. The Quran tells David’s trial differently. In sura 38 two litigants enter David’s chamber, one with ninety-nine ewes and the other with one, and David, after judging between them, realizes he has been tested and asks forgiveness. The Quranic account does not name Bathsheba or mention Uriah. The sexual-scandal version arrived in Muslim literature later through storytellers drawing on the biblical narrative, and a number of Muslim scholars have rejected it as foreign material. The point here is not that every telling is invented. It is that the same man can be read as the subject of a scandal or as a servant who erred and repented, depending on the source.
Muhammad’s marriage to Aisha is the polemicists’ favorite. Medieval Christian writers already accused him of lust, and the claim that Aisha was six at marriage and nine at consummation is a fixture of modern polemic. The age comes from hadith reports collected in the ninth century, more than two hundred years after the events, not from the Quran, which says nothing about Aisha’s age and attaches marriage to the attainment of maturity, as in sura 4. Muslim scholars have argued over the reliability and meaning of those reports, and some historians have used other data, such as the reported age of her sister Asma, to argue she was older. The charge does not survive contact with the Quran as the only authority; it depends entirely on a later source that the accuser must treat as flawless.
Jesus and the naked youth is the thinnest of the three. A single ambiguous verse, a disputed manuscript, and a general claim about Greek habits are combined into an accusation no ancient reader made.
What the Pattern Shows
In each case, the accusation takes a feature of the narrative- a roof, a young bride, a linen cloth, a seat at supper, a basin of water- and supplies a motive the text does not state. The method is the same whether the target is a prophet of Israel, the Messiah, or the last prophet of Islam. The reader decides in advance what a man of that era would have done, then treats the gap in the text as permission to say it. Before accepting any such reading, ask three questions of it: what does the text say, what does the earliest context allow, and where does the sexual element actually enter? In the case of Mark 14:51–52, it enters only from outside.
