2:96 In fact, you will find them the most covetous of life; even more so than the idol worshipers. The one of them wishes to live a thousand years. But this will not spare him any retribution, no matter how long he lives. GOD is seer of everything they do.
God gave them their final warning, but they chose to disregard it; therefore, it is an inevitable law that they too will be replaced.
47:38 You are invited to spend in the cause of GOD, but some of you turn stingy. The stingy are stingy towards their own souls. GOD is Rich, while you are poor. If you turn away, He will substitute other people in your place, and they will not be like you.
In the novel “Catch-22,” by Joseph Heller, the protagonist, Captain John Yossarian, attempts a scheme to preserve his life and avoid flying any more combat missions by claiming insanity, hoping to be deemed unfit for combat. However, he encounters the novel’s namesake paradox, Catch-22: if a pilot requests to stop flying missions due to insanity, he demonstrates a rational concern for his safety, thus proving his sanity. This circular logic traps Yossarian; his desire to preserve his life by avoiding dangerous missions is seen as sane, making him ineligible to be grounded.
This humorous take holds a kernel of truth. A genuinely insane person wouldn’t be aware of their insanity, so claiming insanity suggests a level of self-awareness that an insane person wouldn’t possess. This is analogous to claims of piety. Assuming oneself to be righteous and on the correct path, to the extent of feeling assured of paradise, ironically suggests a lack of true piety. True piety often involves humility and a recognition of one’s own fallibility rather than the certainty of one’s own virtue.
4:49 Have you noted those who exalt themselves? Instead, GOD is the One who exalts whomever He wills, without the least injustice.
The above-mentioned verse addresses individuals who assert their own purity to elevate themselves. Ironically, by making such a claim, they inadvertently reveal their actual lack of purity. Additionally, the Quran teaches us that arrogance may reside in our hearts without our conscious awareness of it.
40:56 Surely, those who argue against GOD’s revelations without proof are exposing the arrogance that is hidden inside their chests, and they are not even aware of it. Therefore, seek refuge in GOD; He is the Hearer, the Seer.
Therefore, the most appropriate action we can take is to sincerely ask for God’s assistance in cleansing our hearts and leading us on the right path. We maintain the hope that should He choose, He will absolve us of our sins and allow us into His Paradise. This humble attitude aligns with the example set by Abraham, who, despite being called a beloved friend by God, still possessed the humility to hope for his Lord’s forgiveness and admittance into Paradise rather than being overconfident in his own righteousness.
4:125 Who is better guided in his religion than one who submits totally to GOD, leads a righteous life, according to the creed of Abraham: monotheism? GOD has chosen Abraham as a beloved friend.
26:69 Narrate to them Abraham’s history.
26:70 He said to his father and his people, “What is this you are worshiping?”
26:71 They said, “We worship statues; we are totally devoted to them.”
26:72 He said, “Can they hear you when you implore?
26:73 “Can they benefit you, or harm you?”
26:74 They said, “No; but we found our parents doing this.”
26:75 He said, “Do you see these idols that you worship.
26:76 “You and your ancestors.
26:77 “I am against them, for I am devoted only to the Lord of the universe.
26:78 “The One who created me, and guided me.
26:79 “The One who feeds me and waters me.
26:80 “And when I get sick, He heals me.
26:81 “The One who puts me to death, then brings me back to life.
26:82 “The One who hopefully will forgive my sins on the Day of Judgment.
26:83 “My Lord, grant me wisdom, and include me with the righteous.
26:84 “Let the example I set for the future generations be a good one.
26:85 “Make me one of the inheritors of the blissful Paradise.
26:86 “And forgive my father, for he has gone astray.
26:87 “And do not forsake me on the Day of Resurrection.”
