The first joins a soccer club. From the moment she signs up, she has joined something larger than herself. There are rules she did not write and cannot rewrite. There is a schedule she did not set. There are positions, a season, a league table, and beyond her club a pyramid of other clubs playing the same game by the same laws, all the way up to a World Cup she will watch on television and recognize instantly as the thing she does on Saturdays. She learns the game by playing it, corrected in real time by people who already know it. Within a month she has teammates, a role, and a set of people who will notice if she does not show up.
The second buys a gym membership. He also gets in shape—often more efficiently, tailored precisely to his own goals. But he has joined nothing. The man on the next machine is a stranger and will remain one. One person is doing barbell squats, another is doing something with kettlebells that looks, frankly, ridiculous to the first, and a third is asleep on a bench between sets. Nobody is doing the same thing at the same time, and nobody needs to. It works. It is also, structurally, organized chaos: a room full of people who share a roof and share nothing else.
Notice what has and hasn’t happened. Both are exercising. Both may be sincere, disciplined, and improving. But only one of them has joined something that could grow, travel, and outlive her. The difference has nothing to do with how hard either of them is working. It is a difference in form—whether the activity is shared or private.
Two models
Religious communities fall along the same line.
One model is the league. There is a set form: the same prayer, performed the same way, at the same times, facing the same direction. It was not invented by the person doing it and is not theirs to revise. Because the form is shared, two strangers can stand shoulder to shoulder and pray as one without exchanging a word, and a traveler can walk into a congregation on the other side of the planet and join it instantly, because it is the same thing he does at home.
The other model is the gym. Each person assembles their own practice from the text and their own reasoning. So one holds that there is a Friday congregational prayer and another does not. One treats the prayer as a fixed ritual and another as something looser. On the direction one faces, the answers scatter—the Kaaba, Jerusalem, Egypt, Petra, the North Pole, or the conviction that direction is meaningless. Each person is striving, and perhaps striving hard. But there is no congregation, because no two people are playing the same game.
Why I’m setting correctness aside
The obvious next question is which of these forms is correct—which direction, which prayer, which schedule. That is a real question, and I have written about it elsewhere. But for this essay I am going to set it down entirely, and not as a courtesy. Setting it down is the whole point.
Correctness and coordination are different axes. A practice can be correct and private, or arbitrary and shared, and every combination in between. And the outcome I want to point at—whether a congregation forms—turns out to depend only on the shared-versus-private axis. It does not move at all along the correctness axis. A privatized practice produces no congregation even if it happens to be exactly right. A shared practice produces a congregation even if its particular form were chosen by coin flip.
So I do not need to win the argument about which form is right in order to make this point. I need only ask what happens when each person follows their own. That is not an argument at all, in the end. It is just a consequence.
What happens in the gym
Four things separate a gym from a league, and none of them is about who is doing it correctly.
Synchrony. A congregation is not a collection of people who each pray; it is people praying together—the same act, at the same time, in the same orientation. If each person selects their own direction, their own times, and their own account of what the prayer even is, joint prayer is not discouraged; it is impossible—like a pickup game when each player shows up expecting a different sport. The gym is people in one room who cannot, even in principle, play together.
Inheritance. A shared practice hands itself to the next generation by embodiment. The child is folded into an existing game and learns it by doing, the way children have always learned. A privatized practice has nothing settled to hand down, so every person re-derives it from scratch, and each generation begins a little further from the last. The league produces a tradition. The gym produces, at best, a personal routine that ends when the person who invented it does.
Portability. This is why the league is the right unit, not the team or the single match. A shared form is portable: identical in Cairo, Kuala Lumpur, and Toronto, so a stranger can join without introduction. A private practice does not federate—there is no “joining,” because nothing is there to be joined. Shared standards are precisely what let scattered local groups become a single global body. A gym cannot spontaneously become a league, because it has nothing to federate.
Identity over time. What makes a practice the same practice across a thousand years and a hundred countries is the shared form—not any one person’s version of it. Remove the shared form, and there is no continuous thing to point to at all. There is only a cloud of private routines that happen to share a name.
Granting everything to the individual
Here is what makes this fair rather than a verdict. I can concede everything about the person in the gym.
He is sincere. He may be more disciplined than the woman on the soccer team. He may, in the privacy of his own practice, even have become in better shape than the whole league. Grant all of it. The outcome does not change: still no congregation.
Because what fails is not his effort, his sincerity, or even his correctness. What fails is that effort without shared form does not aggregate. Individual optimization and collective coordination are simply different operations, and no amount of the first ever sums to the second. A thousand people each perfecting their own private prayer do not, at any point, become a congregation—not because any one of them did it wrong, but because “doing it alone, your own way” is the one thing a congregation cannot be made of.
Whether each of them is right before God is between them and God, and I am not touching it. But whether they can become one body, growing and crossing borders and lasting past their own lifetimes—that question answers itself, and the answer is no, for reasons that have nothing to do with how the individual scores.
One clarification
It would be easy to hear all this as: it only matters that everyone agrees, not what they agree on—as if the form were like which side of the road to drive on, a pure convention God is indifferent to. That is not the claim, and I can rule it out without reopening the question I set aside, simply by keeping the claim conditional.
If you want a congregation—one that grows, travels, and endures—then it requires a shared form; private striving, however sincere, cannot produce one. Whether you should want such a thing, and which form is the right one, are separate questions that live elsewhere. This essay isolates a single variable. Isolating it is not the same as saying the others do not matter.
The gym is a fine place to get strong. It is simply not a team, will never be a league, and cannot become one by adding more people—each doing their own thing, under one roof, alone together.
