Immanuel Kant (1724-1804) famously wrote that two things filled his mind with ever-increasing wonder and awe: the starry heavens above him and the moral law within him. It is a strange accident of intellectual history that this sentence, perhaps one of the most quoted in all of modern moral philosophy, so perfectly corresponds with the verse of the Quran.
We will show them our proofs in the horizons, and within themselves, until they realize that this is the truth. Is your Lord not sufficient, as a witness of all things? (41:53)
Kant believed he had discovered, through pure reason, the structure of morality itself:
a universal law that binds all rational beings,
that forbids treating persons as mere instruments,
that grounds an inviolable human dignity,
and that demands to be obeyed for its own sake rather than for reward.
Each of these four pillars is not merely compatible with the Quran but is articulated within it—sometimes with a precision that anticipates Kant’s own formulations by eleven centuries. This aligns with the verses of the Quran, which present morality as universal (91:8), rational (4:82), dignity-conferring (3:92), and non-transactional (76:9), and that it does so in its own explicit vocabulary.
Act Only on Principles You Could Will Everyone to Follow
Kant’s first formulation of the categorical imperative—act only according to that maxim whereby you can at the same time will that it should become a universal law—is a test of consistency. The wrongdoer, on Kant’s analysis, is always a special-pleader: he wills a rule for others (honesty, fair dealing) while exempting himself. Immorality is a kind of practical contradiction.
The Quran opens one of its shorter suras with exactly this diagnosis.
Woe to the cheaters. Who demand full measure when receiving from the people. But when giving them the measures or weights, they cheat. (83:1–3).
Notice what makes the fraudster contemptible here. It is not merely that he causes harm; it is the asymmetry. He demands full measure as a receiver and gives short measure as a giver. He wills one law when he stands on one side of the scale and another law when he stands on the other. He has made himself an exception to the very rule whose universal observance he depends upon—for if everyone gave short measure, the institution of commerce that enriches him would collapse. This is Kant’s contradiction-in-the-will, rendered as a scene in a marketplace.
The same test appears in the Quran’s instructions on charity:
O you who believe, you shall give to charity from the good things you earn, and from what we have produced for you from the earth. Do not pick out the bad therein to give away, when you yourselves do not accept it unless your eyes are closed. You should know that GOD is Rich, Praiseworthy. (2:267).
The standard for what one gives to others is what one would accept for oneself—universalizability applied to generosity. And the Quran turns the test on the religious hypocrite with equal force:
Do you exhort the people to be righteous, while forgetting yourselves, though you read the scripture? Do you not understand ( ta’qilun)? (2:44).
The verse is remarkable not only for its content but for its final clause. The hypocrite’s failure is described as a failure of reason ( afala ta’qilun)—precisely Kant’s claim that the special-pleader is not merely wicked but irrational.
But the Quran’s fullest anatomy of the special-pleader comes at its very threshold. Before Sura 2 legislates anything, it sorts humanity into three types—the believers, the disbelievers, and then, at greatest length, the hypocrites who are defined by their moral asymmetry:
Then there are those who say, “We believe in GOD and the Last Day,” while they are not believers. In trying to deceive GOD and those who believe, they only deceive themselves without perceiving. In their minds there is a disease… When they are told, “Do not commit evil,” they say, “But we are righteous!” In fact, they are evildoers, but they do not perceive. When they are told, “Believe like the people who believed,” they say, “Shall we believe like the fools who believed?” In fact, it is they who are fools, but they do not know. When they meet the believers, they say, “We believe,” but when alone with their devils, they say, “We are with you; we were only mocking.” (2:8–14)
Every clause of this portrait is a study in the two-law mind. These are people who maintain one maxim for performance and another for practice—one face for the believers, another when “alone with their devils.” When confronted with the moral law, they do not deny it; they deny that it applies to them. Told “do not commit evil,” they answer not with repentance but with reclassification: “But we are righteous!”—in the verse’s own idiom, they are muslihun, reformers. The evildoer does not merely exempt himself from the law; he relabels his exemption as virtue, his corruption as reform. And in 2:13 the special-pleading becomes explicit contempt for universality itself: “Shall we believe like the fools who believed?” The law, they concede, is fine for the masses—the fools—but beneath persons of their sophistication. This is the categorical imperative’s negation stated as a sneer: a rule for everyone, and an exception for me.
Underlying all these particular tests is the Quran’s insistence that the moral order is invariant.
You will find that GOD’s system is never changeable; you will find that GOD’s system is immutable. (35:43).
Moral law, like the celestial order the Quran so often invokes, does not bend for persons, tribes, or circumstances:
O you who believe, you shall be absolutely equitable, and observe GOD, when you serve as witnesses, even against yourselves, or your parents, or your relatives. Whether the accused is rich or poor, GOD takes care of both. Therefore, do not be biased by your personal wishes. If you deviate or disregard (this commandment), then GOD is fully Cognizant of everything you do. (4:135).
And the mirror-image verse:
O you who believe, you shall be absolutely equitable, and observe GOD, when you serve as witnesses. Do not be provoked by your conflicts with some people into committing injustice. You shall be absolutely equitable, for it is more righteous. You shall observe GOD. GOD is fully Cognizant of everything you do. (5:8).
Justice toward those you love and justice toward those you hate are the two hardest cases for universalization—the two situations where every human being is most tempted to carve out an exception—and the Quran names both explicitly.
Even the Quran’s core moral vocabulary presupposes universality. The good it commands is called al-ma’ruf—literally “the known,” “the recognized”—and the evil it forbids is al-munkar, “the unrecognized,” that which sound reason repudiates. The choice of words is philosophically loaded: morality is not presented as an arbitrary decree intelligible only to insiders, but as something every rational agent already recognizes. This is why the Quran describes its religion as deen al-fitra, the religion of humanity’s innate disposition:
Therefore, you shall devote yourself to the religion of strict monotheism. Such is the natural instinct placed into the people by GOD. Such creation of GOD will never change. This is the perfect religion, but most people do not know. (30:30).
The moral law within, in other words, is not installed by revelation; revelation confirms and clarifies what was already inscribed. Kant sought a morality binding on all rational beings as such, independent of local custom or private advantage. The Quran claims to be addressed to exactly such beings, and repeatedly signs off its arguments with the refrain: for a people who reason.
Never Use People Merely as Tools
Kant’s second formulation—treat humanity, in your own person and in others, always as an end and never merely as a means—forbids the reduction of persons to instruments. The Quran’s legislative and ethical program can be read, almost in its entirety, as a war against precisely this reduction, waged against its most common ancient forms: usury, slavery, the exploitation of orphans, and the degradation of the poor.
Consider usury. The Quran’s prohibition of riba (2:275–279) targets the purest case of using a person merely as a means: the lender who converts another’s desperation into a revenue stream, extracting wealth from need itself while contributing nothing. The Quran does not merely regulate this practice; it declares “war from God and His Messenger” upon it—language it uses for almost nothing else—and commands instead:
If the debtor is unable to pay, wait for a better time. If you give up the loan as a charity, it would be better for you, if you only knew. (2:280).
The debtor is not a cash flow; he is a person whose circumstances impose claims on you.
Consider the orphan—the paradigmatic powerless person of the ancient world, possessing property but no protector, the easiest human being to instrumentalize. The Quran returns to the orphan obsessively.
Those who consume the orphans’ properties unjustly, eat fire into their bellies, and will suffer in Hell. (4:10).
And in Sura 107, the Quran does something startling: it defines religious fraudulence itself by the treatment of the weak.
Do you know who really rejects the faith ( deen)? That is the one who mistreats the orphans. And does not advocate the feeding of the poor. (107:1–3).
The denial of judgment is diagnosed not by creed but by whether one treats the powerless as ends or as refuse.
Consider slavery, the institution that is nothing but the treatment of persons as tools. The Quran defines the “steep path” of virtue as beginning with “the freeing of a slave” (90:12–13), makes emancipation a standard expiation for offenses, directs zakat funds toward liberation (9:60), and commands masters to grant emancipation contracts to slaves who seek them—”and give them from the wealth of God which He has given you” (24:33). The master must not merely release the slave but capitalize his freedom. Within the moral horizon of late antiquity, this is a program aimed at converting instruments back into ends.
Perhaps the most philosophically elegant expression of this principle, however, concerns not the mistreatment of the vulnerable but the corruption of kindness itself. The Quran teaches that charity is nullified by reminders of generosity and by injury:
O you who believe, do not nullify your charities by inflicting reproach and insult, like one who spends his money to show off, while disbelieving in GOD and the Last Day. His example is like a rock covered with a thin layer of soil; as soon as heavy rain falls, it washes off the soil, leaving it a useless rock. They gain nothing from their efforts. GOD does not guide disbelieving people. (2:264).
Why should a reminder invalidate a gift? Because the giver who holds his generosity over the recipient has quietly converted him into an instrument—a prop for the giver’s self-image, a debtor in a theater of status. The gift was never for the recipient at all. Against this the Quran sets its ideal of giving:
“We feed you for the sake of GOD; we expect no reward from you, nor thanks. (76:9).
Not even gratitude may be extracted. The recipient of true charity is left wholly un-instrumentalized—an end, full stop.
If the Quran’s legislation forbids instrumentalization, its greatest narrative dramatizes it. Sura 12—the story of Joseph—can be read from beginning to end as a study of a single person passed from hand to hand, each hand grasping him as a means. The brothers open the sura with a motive of pure instrumentality:
“Let us kill Joseph, or banish him, that you may get some attention from your father. Afterwards, you can be righteous people.” (12:9).
Joseph is not even hated for himself; he is an obstruction to a resource—Jacob’s love—that they want redirected, and once he is disposed of, his shirt is stained with false blood and converted into a stage prop in a deception aimed at their own father (12:18). The caravan that draws him from the well completes the reduction in the most literal terms the Kantian vocabulary allows: “they concealed him as merchandise” (12:19), and “they sold him for a cheap price, a few dirhams, attaching no value to him” (12:20). Kant’s distinction is that persons have dignity while things have a price; the sura marks the violation by assigning a human being a price—and a cheap one.
The pattern then repeats through every station of Joseph’s descent. The governor purchases him, speculating on his usefulness—”perhaps he will benefit us, or we will adopt him as a son” (12:21). The governor’s wife attempts to make his body serve her desire, and when refused, engineers his imprisonment to protect her standing (12:23–32). The freed cellmate extracts a dream interpretation, walks out of prison on the strength of it, and then forgets about him after his purpose was utilized.
Yet the sura is not merely a catalog of instrumentalization; it stages its undoing. When the king finally summons Joseph, Joseph interprets the king’s dream without asking anything in return (12:48-49). Then when he is asked to be hired by the king, he places his dignity above his freedom, declining to be rescued as a convenience when he can be vindicated as a person (12:50). Only then does the first genuinely reciprocal relationship of the sura appear:
The king said, “Bring him to me, so I can hire him to work for me.” When he talked with him, he said, “Today, you have a prominent position with us.” (12:54),
And Joseph, exercising his own rational agency, requests to be made treasurer (12:55), not so he could benefit his own skin, but to save the population and the family that left him for dead from famine and starvation. And running beneath the whole narrative is the counterpoint of Joseph’s own conduct, for he instrumentalizes no one. He interprets his fellow prisoners’ dreams and asks nothing for it, saves the society that imprisoned him and his own brothers who abandoned him, and even when he holds absolute power over them, waives the debt entirely: “No blame upon you today” (12:92). The sura thus gives the second formulation of the categorical imperative both of its faces in a single story—every violation of it in Joseph’s treatment, and its perfect observance in Joseph’s character.
Respect the Dignity and Rational Autonomy of Every Person
Kant grounds his ethics in the dignity ( Würde) of rational beings: persons have not a price but a worth beyond all price, because they are self-legislating rational agents. The Quran contains what may be the most direct pre-modern statement of universal human dignity in any scripture:
We have honored the children of Adam, and provided them with rides on land and in the sea. We provided for them good provisions, and we gave them greater advantages than many of our creatures. (17:70).
The verse’s scope is crucial. It is not the believers who are honored, not the Arabs, not the righteous—but the children of Adam, representing all of humanity. Dignity here is conferred at the level of the species and is therefore inalienable by creed, tribe, or status, and according to the Quran, all dignity comes from God.
Anyone seeking dignity should know that to GOD belongs all dignity. To Him ascends the good words, and He exalts the righteous works. As for those who scheme evil works, they incur severe retribution; the scheming of such people is destined to fail. (35:10)
If all dignity belongs to God, then the person who seeks it elsewhere—from wealth, tribe, rank, or the applause of others—is not adding to his worth but trading it away. He is exchanging a dignity that was conferred unconditionally for a counterfeit that others can grant and therefore revoke, converting what has no price into something priced. He devalues the very humanity God has given him. This is the Quran’s version of Kant’s distinction between dignity and price: whatever has a market value has a price and can be exchanged; what has dignity admits of no equivalent and no exchange. The seeker of status-dignity has made himself a commodity in the very act of seeking.
The Quran’s account of human creation reinforces the point: humanity is fashioned “in the best of stature” (95:4), given the discretion between right and wrong (91:8), and entrusted with the amanah, the moral Trust, freedom of choice, that the heavens and the earth themselves declined to bear (33:72). To be human, in the Quran’s anthropology, is to be the one being in creation capable of moral self-governance. That is nearly a definition of Kantian personhood.
And because the dignity God conferred consists in moral agency, the Quran protects that agency with a rigor that startled even modern readers.
There shall be no compulsion in religion: the right way is now distinct from the wrong way. (2:256).
The verse’s logic deserves attention: coercion is forbidden because truth is rationally distinguishable—compulsion is not merely cruel but pointless, since a coerced belief is no belief at all. The theme is not incidental; it is structural.
Proclaim: “This is the truth from your Lord,” then whoever wills let him believe, and whoever wills let him disbelieve. (18:29).
Had your Lord willed, all the people on earth would have believed.± Do you want to force the people to become believers? (10:99).
Even the Prophet’s own role is explicitly circumscribed in Kantian terms:
You shall remind, for your mission is to deliver this reminder. You have no power over them. (88:21–22).
Revelation, on the Quran’s self-description, addresses autonomous agents; it argues, warns, and reminds, but it does not coerce, because a coerced will has no moral worth.
The Quran does not merely permit rational autonomy; it commands its exercise.
You shall not accept any information, unless you verify it for yourself. I have given you the hearing, the eyesight, and the brain, and you are responsible for using them. (17:36).
Each person is made epistemically responsible for the operation of his own faculties—one cannot outsource one’s judgment and then plead obedience. The Quran’s condemnation of those who say “we found our fathers upon a way, and we are following in their footsteps” (43:23) is a condemnation of heteronomy itself: the surrender of one’s rational agency to inherited authority. Conversely, it praises
They are the ones who examine all words, then follow the best. These are the ones whom GOD has guided; these are the ones who possess intelligence. (39:18).
The praised believer is not the one who follows instructions but the one who evaluates and selects—a rational legislator, not a subject.
Finally, the Quran insists on the strict individuality of moral responsibility: “No bearer of burdens shall bear the burden of another” (6:164, cf. 17:15, 35:18, 39:7, 53:38). There is no inherited guilt, no vicarious atonement, no collective liability that swallows the person. Each soul stands before the law as itself—”and man will be a witness against himself, even if he offers his excuses” (75:14–15). One could hardly ask for a cleaner scriptural statement of the autonomous moral subject.
Do Your Duty Because It Is Right—Not Because It Benefits You
Here the skeptic will object: surely the Quran, with its gardens and its fire, is the most transactional of moral documents—precisely the “heteronomous” morality of reward and punishment that Kant rejected. The objection deserves a serious answer, and the Quran supplies one at two levels.
First, the Quran itself explicitly distinguishes moral action done for gain from moral action done for the sake of the Good, and it locates all worth in the latter. Its master concept here is ikhlas—sincerity, exclusive devotion, and purity of motive:
All that was asked of them was to worship GOD, devoting the religion absolutely to Him alone, observe the contact prayers (Salat), and give the obligatory charity (Zakat). Such is the perfect religion. (98:5).
The Quran’s term for the right motive is seeking wajh Allah, the “countenance” or “face” or “presence” of God—the Good in itself, sought for itself.
You are not responsible for guiding anyone. GOD is the only one who guides whoever chooses (to be guided). Any charity you give is for your own good. Any charity you give shall be for the sake of GOD. Any charity you give will be repaid to you, without the least injustice. (2:272).
According to the Quran, this is one of the attributes of the righteous.
Who gives from his money to charity. Seeking nothing in return. Seeking only his Lord, the Most High. (92:18–20).
The verse pointedly excludes reciprocity: he is not settling accounts, not investing in social capital. And as we saw, the ideal givers of Sura 76 renounce even gratitude. If Kant’s shopkeeper—honest because honesty is profitable—does the right thing without moral worth, the Quran agrees, and says so in its own idiom: deeds performed “to be seen by people” (2:264) are void, like “a smooth rock covered with dust upon which heavy rain falls, leaving it bare.”
The Quran even contains a portrait of the transactional believer that reads like a case study in heteronomy:
Among the people there is the one who worships GOD conditionally. If things go his way, he is content. But if some adversity befalls him, he makes an about-face. Thus, he loses both this life and the Hereafter. Such is the real loss. (22:11).
This man’s religion is a contract; the moment the payments stop, so does the piety. The Quran holds him up not as a lesser believer but as the image of failure.
If there were a quick material gain, and a short journey, they would have followed you. But the striving is just too much for them. They will swear by GOD: “If we could, we would have mobilized with you.” They thus hurt themselves, and GOD knows that they are liars. (9:42)
Genuine faith, by contrast, is tested precisely by the withdrawal of benefit:
Do the people think that they will be left to say, “We believe,” without being put to the test? We have tested those before them, for GOD must distinguish those who are truthful, and He must expose the liars. (29:2-3).
Second, what of paradise and hell themselves? Here the deepest reply is that Kant’s own system contains their functional equivalent. In the Critique of Practical Reason, Kant argued that morality, while it must not be motivated by happiness, nonetheless rationally requires the postulates of God and immortality—because the highest good demands that happiness ultimately be proportioned to virtue, and only a moral Governor of the universe can guarantee that proportion. A universe in which the righteous and the wicked meet the same annihilation is, for Kant, a universe in which practical reason’s deepest demand goes unanswered.
Do those who work evil expect that we will treat them in the same manner as those who believe and lead a righteous life? Can their life and their death be the same?± Wrong indeed is their judgment. (45:21)
The Quran’s Yawm al-Deen—the Day of Judgment—is exactly this guarantee: the day on which the moral ledger of the universe is finally balanced.
GOD created the heavens and the earth for a specific purpose, in order to pay each soul for whatever it earned, without the least injustice. (45:22).
Eschatology, on this reading, is not a bribe dangled before the selfish; it is the metaphysical assurance that the moral law is not a beautiful fiction—that the universe, at bottom, is just. That no different than one cannot attempt to operate in a world where the laws of physics don’t apply to them, the universal laws of morality work in the same manner. Kant had to postulate it. The Quran proclaims it. But both stand against the same adversary: the nihilist who says that because the scales never balance, the law is a fantasy.
Absolutely, GOD’s allies have nothing to fear, nor will they grieve. They are those who believe and lead a righteous life. For them, joy and happiness in this world, as well as in the Hereafter. This is GOD’s unchangeable law. Such is the greatest triumph. (10:62-64)
The Convergence and What It Means
Lay the four maxims beside the verses, and the pattern is difficult to dismiss.
Universalizability: the woe upon those who take full measure and give short, the command to be just even against yourself and even toward those you hate, the advocating what is good and deemed as “the recognized” and addressed to “a people who reason.”
The prohibition on treating persons as mere tools: the war on usury, the defense of the orphan, the program of emancipation, the charity that may not extract even gratitude—and an entire sura in which a human being is sold as merchandise for a few dirhams and then restored, station by station, to an end-in-himself.
