Some of the most consequential encounters between the human and the divine are staged beneath a tree. Adam is settled in the Garden and given a single prohibition, and it concerns a tree. Moses turns aside toward a fire and is addressed by God from a tree. The Prophet Muhammad, in the vision of Sura 53, is brought to sidrat al-muntahā, the lote tree of the utmost boundary, where he receives what is disclosed to him and beholds the great signs of his Lord. And beyond the Quran entirely, the Buddha attains awakening seated under the tree at Bodh Gaya, the tree thereafter named for enlightenment itself.
In each case a tree marks the precise threshold at which the ordinary world ends and something exceeding it begins. This piece follows that thread—first through the Quran’s own recurring tree, whose Arabic encodes, in the very name of Muhammad’s tree, the idea of comprehension reaching its limit; and then outward to the Bodhi tree, as the farthest echo of a pattern the Quran already contains within itself. It is not an argument that these traditions teach the same thing. They do not, and the differences are decisive. But the recurrence of the one symbol—the tree at the edge of the knowable—is worth taking seriously.
The vision at the horizon
The relevant passage sits in the opening third of An-Najm, “The Star.” In Dr. Rashad Khalifa’s rendering, the encounter unfolds as revelation from a divine source, not as private reverie. The Prophet’s companion “was not astray, nor was he deceived” (53:2); what came was “divine inspiration” (). Then the scene rises to its setting:
The Arabic is بِٱلْأُفُقِ ٱلْأَعْلَىٰ ( bil-ufuqi’l-aʿlā). An ufuq is a horizon—which is to say, a limit of vision, the farthest edge that sight can reach. The passage is placed, from its outset, at a boundary of perception. Revelation descends “to His servant” (53:10), and then the text describes a second sighting:
53:13 — “He saw him in another descent.”
53:14 — “At the ultimate point.”
Verse 14 is our first key verse. The Arabic reads عِندَ سِدْرَةِ ٱلْمُنتَهَىٰ ( ʿinda sidrati’l-muntahā)—literally, “at the lote tree of the utmost boundary.” It is telling that Dr. Khalifa does not translate this as “the lote tree” at all, but as “the ultimate point.” He has chosen to render the sense of the phrase over its botanical image, and in doing so he has foregrounded exactly what the Arabic already carries in its bones.
What the tree is named after
Sidra (سِدْرَة) is the lote or jujube tree, a hardy, shade-giving tree of arid country. The Quran knows it in two registers: as a diminished blessing among the ruins of a punished people (34:16), and as a thornless tree of the Garden (56:28). At the boundary of the heavens it stands as sidrat al-muntahā.
The weight of the phrase, though, falls on al-muntahā (ٱلْمُنتَهَىٰ)—”the utmost,” “the farthest limit,” “the terminus.” It derives from the root ن-ه-ي ( n-h-y), and this root is where the passage quietly opens onto the theme of comprehension. The same three letters yield:
نَهَىٰ ( nahā)—to forbid, to restrain, to hold back;
ٱنتَهَىٰ ( intahā)—to come to an end, to reach the utmost;
ٱلْمُنتَهَىٰ ( al-muntahā)—the extreme limit, the end-point;
That last derivative is the crucial one. The Quran uses it twice, both times in the phrase لِأُولِي ٱلنُّهَىٰ ( li-ulī’n-nuhā), “for those possessed of understanding” (20:54; 20:128). The classical lexicographers explained why the same root gives both “the limit” and “the intellect”: reason is called nuhā because it restrains ( yanhā) its possessor from folly, and because it is the faculty that reaches the utmost ( yantahī) of a matter—that arrives at the end of a thing’s reality. Intellect, on this reading, is precisely the capacity to reach the muntahā of what can be known.
So the tree at the muntahā is, by the logic of its own name, the tree at the point where comprehension reaches its terminus. It marks the horizon of intellect in the same way that the ufuq of verse 7 marks the horizon of sight. Beyond it, the created faculty does not proceed under its own power. What lies past the boundary is not attained but disclosed.
This is why the geography of the passage is so consistently a geography of limits: the highest horizon, the utmost boundary, and—as we will see—a vision that is careful not to overstep. The scene is built entirely at the edge of the knowable.
Verse 16: what covers the tree
The second key verse deepens this into something closer to the ineffable:
The Arabic is إِذْ يَغْشَى ٱلسِّدْرَةَ مَا يَغْشَىٰ ( idh yaghshā’s-sidrata mā yaghshā)—literally, “when there enshrouded the lote tree that which enshrouded it.” The verb is from غ-ش-ي ( gh-sh-y), to cover, envelop, overwhelm—the same root that names Sura 88, al-Ghāshiya, “The Overwhelming.” What is remarkable is the deliberate indefiniteness of the object: mā yaghshā, “that which covers it,” left entirely unspecified. The text arrives at the boundary and then declines to say what fills it.
This is not vagueness; it is precision about a limit. At exactly the point where comprehension terminates, the language refuses to name its object—because to name it would be to claim it had been comprehended. The verse enacts, in its grammar, the very boundary the tree marks. And the two verses that follow keep the discipline of the threshold: the gaze “did not waver, nor go blind” (53:17, مَا زَاغَ ٱلْبَصَرُ وَمَا طَغَىٰ—the sight neither swerved nor transgressed), and what was finally seen was “of the greatest signs of his Lord” (53:18, مِنْ آيَاتِ رَبِّهِ ٱلْكُبْرَىٰ). Signs— āyāt—not the divine essence. Even at the utmost point, what is granted to perception is a sign that points, not a possession of the Real itself. The vision reaches the boundary and holds there without overstepping it, which is the nahā, the restraint, buried in the same root as the muntahā.
There is a further resonance worth naming, because it is internal to this very sura. A few verses on, An-Najm dismantles the idols of Mecca with one of the Quran’s sharpest lines: these deities “are but names that you have invented” (53:23). The sura that strips away invented names is the same sura that locates the true vision at the tree of the utmost boundary—the point past which naming fails. The false gods are all name and no reality; the genuine encounter is all reality and, at its climax, no name. The muntahā is where the nameable ends.
The tree Adam was told not to approach
Before either horizon or awakening, the Quran opens with another tree and a boundary. Adam and his wife are settled in the Garden and given one limit: “do not approach this tree” (2:35, repeated at 7:19)— lā taqrabā hādhihi’l-shajara. The prohibition is spatial before it is anything else. It is not first “do not eat” but do not approach ( lā taqrabā): the tree marks a line not to be crossed, and the transgression begins with the crossing of it.
What the tree offers, in the Quran’s telling, is not what the older story names it. There is no “tree of the knowledge of good and evil” here. When the whisperer makes his pitch, he names it differently: “the tree of eternity and a kingdom that never decays” (20:120)—شَجَرَةِ ٱلْخُلْدِ وَمُلْكٍ لَّا يَبْلَىٰ ( shajarati’l-khuldi wa mulkin lā yablā). The bait is immortality and imperishable dominion—precisely the two prerogatives that belong to God alone. The tree thus marks the boundary of the creaturely itself: to cross it is to reach for eternity and absolute kingship, to try to become as God rather than to remain God’s servant.
The reach fails, and the failure is what illuminates, but also causes their fall. Crossing the line produces not divinity as Satan promised, but exposure—”their bodies became visible to them” (7:22; 20:121). The grasp at the divine limit lays bare the creaturely condition it hoped to escape. Adam received from his Lord words, whereby He redeemed him (2:37); the story is the boundary and the recovery from crossing it. The tree is the edge where Paradise leads to the fall into this world.
Hold this beside the vision of Sura 53. At the sidrat al-muntahā, the gaze “did not transgress” (53:17, wa mā ṭaghā)—it reached the utmost boundary and held there in perfect restraint. Adam’s tree is that same boundary approached and crossed; Muhammad’s tree is the boundary reached and honored. Between them lie the two possible positions before the divine limit: the transgression ( ṭughyān) that exposes, and the restraint that is granted the vision of signs.
The tree from which God spoke
Between the forbidden tree and the utmost tree stands the tree of Moses. He turns aside toward a fire at the edge of a valley, and what happens there is given in the verse under discussion:
28:30 — “…he was called from the edge of the right side of the valley, in the blessed spot where the burning bush ( al-shajara) was located: ‘O Moses, this is Me. GOD; Lord of the universe.'”
Here a note on the Arabic earns its place. The word Dr. Khalifa renders “burning bush” is ٱلشَّجَرَة ( al-shajara), from the root ش-ج-ر ( sh-j-r)—not a special term for a low desert shrub, but the ordinary Quranic word for tree. It is the same word used of Adam’s tree, and elsewhere of the trees of the Garden. “Burning bush” is an interpretive rendering, carried over from the familiar Exodus scene; the Arabic says simply the tree. And it says something more direct than the English lets on: the call comes مِنَ ٱلشَّجَرَةِ ( mina’l-shajarati), from the tree. Dr. Khalifa’s “where the burning bush was located” sets the tree at the scene; the Arabic sets the voice in it. Moses is addressed from the tree itself.
Notice, once again, the geography of the limit. Moses stands at شَاطِئِ ٱلْوَادِ ( shāṭiʾi’l-wād), the edge, the bank of the valley—a border, a threshold—and the spot is mubāraka, blessed, the same sacred register that attaches to the heavenly tree. The tree stands at an edge, marks a blessed boundary, and becomes the point from which the divine voice issues.
And yet even here the limit holds. This is the same Moses who will later ask to see his Lord and be answered, “You cannot see Me” (7:143). At the tree he is addressed—”this is Me, God”—but the mode is voice, not sight; disclosure, not possession. The tree is where God speaks to the creature, not where the creature seizes the Creator.
Three trees, one boundary
Set the three side by side, and the Quran’s own pattern comes into view. Adam is told not to approach the tree and crosses it—the boundary transgressed, the creaturely condition exposed. Moses is called toward the tree and addressed from it—the boundary honored, the divine voice granted. Muhammad is brought to the tree of the utmost limit, and his gaze does not transgress—the boundary reached and held, the signs of the Lord disclosed. Crossed, approached, held: three comportments before the same edge, each of them figured as a tree. The Quran does not reach for this image once. It reaches for it whenever a human being is placed at the line between the creaturely and the divine.
It is against this internal pattern—not in isolation—that the tree outside the Book becomes interesting.
The tree of awakening
Siddhartha Gautama, after abandoning both palace and severe asceticism, sat beneath a pipal tree at Bodh Gaya and resolved not to rise until he had penetrated the nature of suffering and reality. What he attained there is bodhi (बोधि), from the Sanskrit root बुध् ( budh)—to awaken, to perceive, to know. From the same root comes buddha (बुद्ध), “the awakened one,” “the one who knows.” The tree took its name from the event: the Bodhi tree, the tree of awakening.
Here the linguistic parallel becomes hard to ignore. In one tradition the site of supreme insight is named for the muntahā, the utmost reach of comprehension, sharing a root with nuhā, intellect. In the other it is named for bodhi, awakening, from a root meaning to know and to perceive. Two trees, two names, and both names are drawn from the vocabulary of knowing at its highest pitch.
The pipal carries its own cosmic freight in the broader Indic imagination. In the Hindu scriptures, the aśvattha—the same species—appears as an inverted world-tree with its roots above and its branches below (Bhagavad Gita 15.1), an axis joining the seen to the unseen. One need not import that reading into Buddhism to notice that, across the region, this tree was already the natural emblem for the join between orders of reality. When the Buddha sits beneath it, he sits at a symbol that a whole civilization had reserved for the meeting of worlds.
Where the trees diverge
The convergence is real, and it would be intellectually dishonest to let it flatten the traditions into one. The Quran’s trees and the Buddha’s mark the same boundary but describe opposite motions across it.
The Buddha’s tree is a seat. He sits beneath it, and awakening arises there through his own sustained insight into impermanence and dependent origination. The illumination is interior; its direction is upward and outward from within the seeker. There is, in the early tradition, no deity delivering a message. What is discovered is the structure of reality itself.
The Prophet’s tree is a threshold. He does not sit beneath it in meditation; he is brought to it, and it stands at the outer limit of the creaturely, “the ultimate point” beyond which the servant does not pass. The illumination descends—”it was divine inspiration” (53:4), “He revealed to His servant what was to be revealed” (53:10). The direction is downward, from the highest horizon toward the recipient. What is granted is not a realization the mind generates but a disclosure it receives, and what is seen at the summit is a sign of the Lord, not the Lord grasped.
Seat versus threshold; ascent of realization versus descent of revelation; a truth uncovered from within versus a truth sent from beyond. These are not small differences, and the Quran is emphatic on its side of them across all three of its trees: at each one the initiative is God’s. He forbids at Adam’s tree, He speaks at Moses’s, He discloses His signs at Muhammad’s; the human being is servant ( ʿabd) throughout—the one who is placed at the boundary, not the one who generates what is found there.
The horizon and the self
And yet the Quran itself supplies the frame in which the parallel stops being a coincidence and becomes intelligible. In one of its most quoted epistemological statements, the text promises:
41:53—”We will show them Our proofs in the horizons and within themselves, until it becomes clear to them that this is the truth.”
Signs are given in two places— fī’l-āfāq, on the horizons, and fī anfusihim, within the souls. The outer boundary and the inner one are both, by the Quran’s own account, sites where reality declares itself.
Read against that verse, the two trees fall into place as the two directions of a single disclosure. The Prophet’s vision is at the ufuq, the outer horizon—the sign on the far edge of the world. The Buddha’s awakening is fī’l-nafs, in the depths of the self—the sign within. That the Quran names both as loci of signs does not make the two events theologically equivalent; the Quran would insist that only one of them is revelation in the strict sense. But it does mean that the human encounter with the limit of comprehension is expected, from within the Quranic view, to occur at both the horizon and the self—and it is striking that both traditions, reaching that limit, reach for the same image to mark it.
The tree as the edge of the knowable
Why a tree, in every one of these cases? A tree is rooted in the ground the seeker stands on and rises past the height the seeker can reach. It belongs to the ordinary world and yet climbs out of it. It is the most natural emblem available for a boundary that is continuous with our world at its base and disappears above our comprehension at its crown. When a tradition wants to mark the exact place where the knowable gives way to what exceeds it, the tree is waiting to be used—which is perhaps why it keeps being used.
Sura 53 goes further than most in making the name of its tree do the work. Sidrat al-muntahā: the tree of the point where reaching ends, from the root that also gives the word for the intellect that does the reaching. Dr. Khalifa was not taking a liberty when he wrote “the ultimate point.” He was translating what the phrase means. The Prophet is brought to the terminus of comprehension, the gaze holds steady at the limit without transgressing it, the object of vision is left unnamed because it lies past naming, and what is finally granted is a sign.
Gather them, then: the tree Adam was forbidden to approach, the tree from which Moses was addressed, the tree of the utmost boundary at which Muhammad’s vision came to rest—and, outside the Book, the tree of awakening under which the Buddha arrived at his own terminus of the knowable by the opposite road. The roads do not converge; the Quran would grant the name of revelation to only one of them. But every one of them ends beneath a tree, at the line where the creaturely gives out and something past it begins. That the same image should mark that line again and again, across languages and lineages that never borrowed it from one another, may itself be one of the signs on the horizon that the Quran told us to expect.
