There is a word the Quran almost never lets God turn upon His own being. Nafs—self, soul—runs through the scripture in its hundreds, but nearly always of the human being: the soul that tastes death, the soul held in pledge for what it has earned, the soul that will find every deed waiting for it on the last day. When the direction reverses, and the self in question is God’s own, spoken of in the third person as Himself, the entire text yields only four occurrences. God names His own self in the first person elsewhere—”I made you for Myself,” He tells Moses—and Jesus addresses it in the second—”You know what is in Your self.” But God speaking of Himself, in the distant grammar of the third person, happens four times and never a fifth. They fall in two suras, two apiece, and each pair sounds a single, unmistakable note. In Sura 3, Āl ʿImrān, it is an alert. In Sura 6, al-Anʿām, it is mercy.
3:28 The believers never ally themselves with the disbelievers, instead of the believers. Whoever does this is exiled from GOD. Exempted are those who are forced to do this to avoid persecution. GOD alerts you of Himself. To GOD is the ultimate destiny.
3:30 The day will come when each soul will find all the good works it had done brought forth. As for the evil works, it will wish that they were far, far removed. GOD alerts you of Himself. GOD is Compassionate towards the people.
The warning comes twice, word for word. Wa-yuḥadhdhirukumu llāhu nafsah—”God alerts you of Himself” (3:28, 3:30). Dr. Khalifa renders the clause as an alert “that you shall reverence Him alone,” which carries the intent, but doesn’t fully carry over the uniqueness found in the Arabic. The verb ḥadhdhara is to caution, to put on guard, to take heed of, and to be cautious of something. Here the something is not the fire, not a punishment held in reserve, not any instrument of consequence. It is God Himself, set in the accusative— nafsahu—as the very One we have to be aware of. To understand why we are to be aware of God Himself is to look at the verse placed between:
3:29 Say, “Whether you conceal your innermost thought, or declare it, GOD is fully aware thereof.” He is fully aware of everything in the heavens and the earth. GOD is Omnipotent.
6:12 Say, “To whom belongs everything in the heavens and the earth?” Say, “To GOD.” He has decreed mercy upon Himself. He will surely summon you all on the Day of Resurrection, which is inevitable. The ones who lose their souls are those who disbelieve.
6:54 When those who believe in our revelations come to you, you shall say, “Salãmun ‘Alaykum (Peace be upon you). He has decreed mercy upon Himself. Thus, anyone among you who commits a transgression out of ignorance, and repents thereafter and reforms, then He is Forgiving, Most Merciful.”
In Sura 6, al-Anʿām, the same self appears, and the key changes entirely. Kataba ʿalā nafsihi al-raḥmah—He has “prescribed mercy upon Himself” (6:12, 6:54). Dr. Khalifa translates this expression as God “has decreed that mercy is His attribute,” which is true but doesn’t fully encompass the uniqueness of the Arabic. Kataba is to write, to inscribe, to decree as binding; ʿalā is upon, the preposition of obligation, the same word that carries what is owed. And here the self stands in the genitive— nafsihi—the self upon which something has been written. The sovereign who owes nothing, who stands under no law above Him, has taken a pen to His own being and bound it to mercy. Grace is not extracted from God and not imposed on Him; it is self-decreed. Mercy is the one obligation we are told that God has authored upon Himself.
Final Thoughts
Four times, then, God speaks the word for Himself. Twice He warns you of it, and twice He binds it to mercy. What holds the four together is that both acts issue from God. God is not fearsome because a cosmic penalty stands over the human being; He warns you of Himself. God is not merciful because mercy is a law seated above Him; He wrote it upon Himself. Reverence and compassion both trace back past every intermediary to the divine being as such. And the two will not fully separate. The warning of Sura 3, al-ʿImrān, dissolves into God’s compassion toward His servants; the mercy of al-Anʿām is set beside the Day of Resurrection the verse calls beyond doubt, and beside those who lose their souls in disbelief. Fear is lined with tenderness; tenderness is framed by the reckoning.
But why should God write mercy upon Himself at all? Wouldn’t that signify a God that is not immutable? Some of what we say about God is true no matter what; it describes Him as He is in Himself, with or without a world. Other things we say describe how He relates to what He has made, and these apply only once their object exists. God was not “Lord of the sun and moon” before the sun and moon were made—not because He gained anything, but because a relationship needs two terms, and one of them was not yet there. His nature did not change; the thing He now stands in relation to came into being. He is the Creator once there is something created, the Provider once there is someone to provide for. Descriptions like these are eternal in their source but come into play only with an event.
The two self-references are of this second kind. “He warns you of Himself” and “He wrote mercy upon Himself” both wait on something before they can apply, and what they wait on is the same thing: a creature who could choose.
Take mercy first. The Quran does not say mercy simply is God’s, the way a trait belongs to a person. It says He wrote it— kataba, a completed act, a decree. A decree is not a standing quality; it is something enacted, and enacting it requires an occasion. Before there was a creature who had gone wrong, there was nothing to forgive. The Quran points to a first rupture: the feud in the High Society (38:67-69), the descent that followed. That is the instant the self-inscribed mercy becomes intelligible, once there stood a fallen creature who needed a chance to be redeemed. “If God punished the people for their transgressions, He would not leave a single creature on earth” (16:61, 35:45).
The warning answers the same event from the other side. We are told to beware of God because He sees everything, and because we already acknowledged Him. We stood before Him and said “Yes,” and the covenant ends by giving its own reason: so that no one can claim on the Day of Resurrection, “We were not aware of this” (7:172). To be warned of Himself is to be reminded that the One we cannot see still sees us, down to our innermost thoughts, and will not accept the excuse of ignorance from a soul that already gave its word.
So the two rarest things the Quran has God say about Himself are not fixed features of His being. They may be the responses to a single event. The fall of His creatures is what drew them out—warning, because that creature already knew Him and cannot pretend otherwise; mercy, because, having fallen, it needed a way back. Twice He warns you of Himself, and twice He binds Himself to mercy as a response to our bad decision.
