Long before Christianity or the revelation of the Quran, the Torah had already placed two extraordinary commands at the center of man’s relationship with God and with one another.
The first appears in Deuteronomy:
You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your might. — Deuteronomy 6:5 (RSV)
The second appears in Leviticus:
You shall love your neighbor as yourself. — Leviticus 19:18 (RSV)
One points upward, toward God. The other points outward, toward the person beside you. The vertical and the horizontal.
Over time, Jewish teachers began to recognize just how much of the Torah could be understood through that second principle. The Book of Tobit, a Jewish work written centuries before Jesus, records a father instructing his son:
[Tobit 4:14–16] Do not hold over till the next day the wages of any man who works for you, but pay him at once; and if you serve God you will receive payment. Watch yourself, my son, in everything you do, and be disciplined in all your conduct. And what you hate, do not do to any one. Do not drink wine to excess or let drunkenness go with you on your way. Give of your bread to the hungry, and of your clothing to the naked. Give all your surplus to charity, and do not let your eye begrudge your giving of alms.
The principle sits in the middle of remarkably concrete obligations. Pay the worker. Feed the hungry. Clothe the naked. Give to those in need. Do not do to another what you yourself would hate to have done to you.
Around the time of Jesus, the Jewish sage Hillel would make essentially the same principle the key to understanding the Torah itself. The Babylonian Talmud preserves the famous story of a gentile who first approached Hillel’s contemporary Shammai:
There was another incident involving one gentile who came before Shammai and said to Shammai: Convert me on condition that you teach me the entire Torah while I am standing on one foot. Shammai pushed him away with the builder’s cubit in his hand. The same gentile came before Hillel. He converted him and said to him: That which is hateful to you do not do to another; that is the entire Torah, and the rest is its interpretation. Go study. — Shabbat 31a
Hillel’s answer is remarkable not merely because it resembles Tobit’s much earlier formulation, but because of the claim he makes for it: that is the entire Torah; the rest is interpretation.
He did not mean that the rest of the Torah should be discarded. His final words are “Go study.” The commandments still matter. But they are to be understood in relation to something more fundamental. Beneath the multitude of laws lies a principle that gives them their moral direction.
Then comes Jesus.
According to Matthew, a lawyer asked him which commandment in the Law was the greatest. Jesus did not invent a new principle. He reached directly into the Torah and brought together the two commands with which we began:
[Matthew 22:35–40] And one of them, a lawyer, asked him a question, to test him. Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law?” And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.” This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” On these two commandments depend all the law and the prophets.
Here the structure becomes explicit. Love God. Love your neighbor. Everything else hangs from these two.
Hillel had said that the Torah could be understood through the principle governing how one treats another. Jesus places that principle beside the Torah’s command concerning how one treats God and identifies the two together as the foundation upon which “all the law and the prophets” depend.
This gives us a remarkably simple way of seeing scripture. There is what we owe God, and there is what we owe one another. The vertical and the horizontal. The many commandments give these two relationships form: worship, prayer, fasting, charity, honesty, justice, care for parents, care for the poor. They are not arbitrary religious requirements scattered across scripture. They train, protect, and embody the two fundamental relationships. And this is where the convergence becomes difficult to dismiss. Because when the Quran sets out to define righteousness, it organizes it around precisely the same two axes.
The Quran does the same
Because the Quran performs the identical reduction. Asked, in effect, what righteousness is, it refuses to locate it in ritual form and relocates it in the two-fold core:
2:177 Righteousness is not turning your faces towards the east or the west. Righteous are those who believe in GOD, the Last Day, the angels, the scripture, and the prophets; and they give the money, cheerfully, to the relatives, the orphans, the needy, the traveling alien, the beggars, and to free the slaves; and they observe the Contact Prayers (Salat) and give the obligatory charity (Zakat); and they keep their word whenever they make a promise; and they steadfastly persevere in the face of persecution, hardship, and war. These are the truthful; these are the righteous.
Read the shape of the verse. It clears away the ritual layer—righteousness is not which direction you face—and fills righteousness with two things: a relation to God (belief in Him, the Last Day, the scripture) and a relation to one’s neighbor (giving to the relative, the orphan, the destitute, the stranger). The vertical and the horizontal. It is the two greatest commandments, stated as the definition of righteousness itself.
And when the Quran states the covenant it made with the Children of Israel—the Torah’s own covenant, in the Quran’s words—it states it in exactly these terms:
2:83 We made a covenant with the Children of Israel: “You shall not worship except GOD. You shall honor your parents and regard the relatives, the orphans, and the poor. You shall treat the people amicably. You shall observe the Contact Prayers (Salat) and give the obligatory charity (Zakat).”
Worship God alone; then honor parents, relatives, orphans, the poor, and treat people well. The vertical, then the horizontal. This is the Quran’s own account of what the Torah’s covenant contained at its heart—and it is Hillel’s summary and Jesus’s summary, given as the covenant itself. The same structure appears wherever the Quran states the essence of the matter:
4:36 You shall worship GOD alone—do not associate anything with Him. You shall regard the parents, the relatives, the orphans, the poor, the related neighbor, the unrelated neighbor, the close associate, the traveling alien, and your servants. GOD does not like the arrogant show-offs.
God first, neighbor immediately after, in a single breath.
42:38 They respond to their Lord by observing the Contact Prayers (Salat). Their affairs are decided after due consultation among themselves, and from our provisions to them they give (to charity).
The two loves are one
Here, the Quran goes beyond a summary. It does not merely place love of God and love of neighbor side by side as the two great pillars. It makes the second the test of the first. How a person treats the vulnerable is presented as the measure of whether their relation to God is real at all:
107:1-7 Do you know who really rejects the faith? That is the one who mistreats the orphans, and does not advocate the feeding of the poor. And woe to those who observe the contact prayers—who are totally heedless of their prayers. They only show off. And they forbid charity.
What this sura does is it asks who really rejects faith—a question about a person’s standing before God, the vertical relation—and answers it entirely in horizontal terms: the one who mistreats the orphan and will not feed the poor. Then it turns to those who perform the ritual of prayer while withholding charity and calls their prayer a show. The message is severe and unmistakable. You cannot love God while wronging your neighbor. The prayer of a man who turns away the destitute is not a smaller devotion; it is a counterfeit. Treatment of the neighbor is not a second commandment competing with the first for priority—it is the proof that the first is genuine.
This is why the two loves are finally one. Love of neighbor is the visible face of love of God; it is how reverence for the Creator becomes real in the world rather than remaining a claim on the lips. Jesus’s phrasing already carries this—”on these two hang all the Law and the Prophets,” two commandments named but one hinge on which everything turns—and the Quran states the mechanism outright: strip away the charity and the prayer is exposed as performance. The vertical without the horizontal is show. The horizontal is where the vertical is tested and found real, or found empty.
Which makes the rites commentary
Now the consequence, which returns us to Hillel’s remarkable phrase. If the core of scripture is the two-fold love—God, and the neighbor through whom that love becomes visible—then the rites are commentary on that core: the practices through which a community trains, remembers, and enacts it.
The Contact Prayer orients a person toward God; the obligatory charity turns what one has received outward toward others. Salat and Zakat give the vertical and horizontal bodily form. One trains the creature to turn toward the Creator; the other prevents that devotion from terminating in the self.
This also helps explain why rites can differ from community to community while the core remains the same. The direction of prayer, the appointed times, the permitted foods, the forms of fasting, the days set apart—these are different ritual grammars through which communities learn to speak the same fundamental language. What does not change is what the grammar is for.
Calling the rites “commentary” does not make them disposable. Hillel’s final words were “Go study.” Commentary is meant to be learned. Ritual disciplines, reminds, and forms the person. But commentary serves the core; it cannot become a substitute for it. The Quran’s warning in Sura 107 could hardly be sharper on this point: a person can perform the prayer and still miss what the prayer was supposed to produce.
And this is what makes the convergence so striking.
The Torah contains the two commands: love God and love your neighbor. Jewish wisdom before Jesus elevated the treatment of one’s neighbor into a principle capable of summarizing the Law. Hillel could therefore tell the prospective convert, “That which is hateful to you do not do to another; that is the entire Torah, and the rest is its interpretation.” Jesus brought the two directions explicitly together: love God and love your neighbor, and “on these two commandments depend all the law and the prophets.” The Quran repeatedly returns to the same architecture—when defining righteousness, when recalling the covenant with Israel, and when exposing the emptiness of prayer divorced from concern for others.
The core was never hidden. There is what we owe God, and there is what we owe one another: the vertical and the horizontal. The rites give those relationships form, discipline, and expression, but they cannot replace them. A prayer that never reaches the orphan has failed at something deeper than ritual.
But calling these the two great relationships leaves one question unresolved: are they really separate?
The Quran suggests something deeper than two obligations merely sitting beside one another. What comes to us vertically is meant to move horizontally. Mercy received becomes mercy extended. Provision received becomes provision shared. Forgiveness received becomes forgiveness offered. The second love is not merely another commandment alongside the first; it is one of the places where the first becomes visible.
Perhaps, then, the vertical and horizontal are not ultimately two separate movements at all, but one movement traveling in two directions: what we cannot repay upward, we pass forward.
